The tornado path started along Route 212 between Woodstock and Saugerties and moved east through the western and southern part of Saugerties before crossing the Hudson River and ending in Tivoli, just south of the Clermont State Historic Site.||The majority of the tornado damage was rated EF-0, but isolated EF-1 damage was noted. Most of the damage was indirect, from trees falling on homes, other structures, and power lines. Downed trees blocked the southbound exit ramp from the New York State Thruway at the Saugerties exit.
Two tall Norway pines were downed on Hoagerburgh Road, one onto a house. Two houses experienced minor roof and flashing damage. Powerlines were down in the area as well.
Episodes
A line of thunderstorms developed in the Mid-Hudson Valley in the early afternoon hours of July 17th ahead of a cold front. Lightning from the storms caused a fire at a substation and resulted in power outages.
Scattered strong to severe thunderstorms developed across eastern New York during the afternoon hours on Wednesday, August 2, 2017. This was due to an upper level disturbance passing through the area. The severe thunderstorms knocked down trees and power lines in Ulster county.
An upper level disturbance passing over the region allowed a few showers and thunderstorms to develop during the evening hours on Saturday, July 16th. Although most of the showers and thunderstorms were weak and short-lived, one of these thunderstorms became severe during the late evening hours, producing a swath of wind damage to trees and power lines across portion of eastern Ulster County. This thunderstorm weakened as it traveled eastward into Dutchess County, and no more significant weather occurred for the remainder of the overnight hours.||Due to the downed wires and poles, up to 3000 customers lost power in Ulster County during the peak of the storm.
A warm and muggy air mass was situated over eastern New York on Tuesday, June 28th. Ahead of a cold front, lines of slow-moving thunderstorms developed during the early to mid afternooon hours. These thunderstorms moved eastward across the Mohawk Valley of southern Herkimer County, producing damaging winds and hail, as well as very heavy rainfall. Some power outages were reported as a result of the downed trees and power lines. ||Thunderstorms moved east of the area by the evening hours, and the cold front eventually crossed the area during the overnight hours.
A stationary front settled across eastern New York and adjacent western New England on the 23rd of May. At the same time, a strong jetstream extended from the Great Lakes region, eastward to New England. A series of Mesoscale Convective Systems (MCS) propagated along this front, producing a series of severe weather events across the region. A deep low pressure area pushed the front across the region by late on the 24th, and produced the most concentrated severe thunderstorm activity. While many areas across eastern New York and adjacent western New England saw damage from the storms, (including many large trees down, flash flooding, and wind gusts in excess of 58 miles per hour), the majority of the structural damage was found in Saratoga and Washington Counties. The Director of Emergency Services in Washington County has estimated the damage to crops and property alone to be in excess of one million dollars. The Director of Emergency Services in Saratoga County has estimated up to $1.3 million in damage was sustained throughout the county, with Galway receiving $80,000 in damage to its roadways. Reports of hail damage, with hail sizes ranging from 3/4" to over 1-½" in diameter, were prevalent across the region as well. Herkimer County officially reported the largest hail; 1-3/4" in diameter. Hail covered the ground in localities in Saratoga, Washington, Herkimer and Ulster counties. In addition to damage to infrastructure, Saratoga County, Galway, Moreau and Livingston all reported incidents of lightning striking homes and places of business, causing minor structural damage, and loss of power to at least 2,000 customers. Excessive rains from the storm produced 2 to 5 inches of rainfall, in some cases in a very short interval of time. There were numerous reports of flash flooding, especially in Washington County. River stem flooding also occurred in parts of the Western Mohawk Valley and Adirondacks. The West Canada Creek in Southern Herkimer County, exceeded flood stage twice over a two day period. The gage at Delta Dam in the Mohawk River, reported its highest level ever and was estimated to be a one hundred year event. In addition, there were reports of incredible amounts of rain in short periods of time, such as the town of Providence in Saratoga County, which reported 10 inches of water on a local road. Damage from all these flooding events were estimated to exceed $1 million, due to mainly to many roads being washed out.
