Power Outage in Kingstree, SC

Wind gusts ranged from 45 to 55 mph across the county. These winds resulted in dozens of downed trees and power lines which led to a few thousand people losing power across the county. In addition, rainfall averaged 3 to 5 inches.

Hurricane Matthew moved up the eastern seaboard, bringing very heavy rain and strong winds. Rainfall amounts were high, with over 13 inches reported northwest of Kingstree, with many areas over 10 inches. Tropical storm force winds and flooded ground caused widespread tree and power line damage. There was major river flooding however along the Black River at Kingstree. Water rescues were needed in this area. Numerous roads were flooded and were impacted by washouts. An emergency shelter in Kingstree was forced to close due to rats escaping from the flooding. More than 2150 homes sustained some damage and of these, 160 homes were destroyed or sustained major damage. Twenty-eight roads and four bridges were damaged. Williamsburg County Emergency Management estimated the damage at around 5 million dollars.

Freezing rain began falling the morning of February 11th. The freezing rain continued intermittently before ending the morning of the 13th. Ice accumulations ranged from a quarter inch up to an inch. Driving conditions were treacherous and there were numerous power outages due to falling limbs and power lines.

A mixture of snow and sleet began falling the afternoon of Jan 28th, changed over to mostly snow in the overnight hours, and tapered off to flurries the morning of the 29th. The precipitation may have briefly started as freezing rain, but there was no ice accumulation reported. Total snow and sleet accumulations in the county ranged from two to three inches. Due to the nature of the precipitation, power outages were isolated, however driving was treacherous. Numerous traffic accidents were reported as well as injuries due to slips and falls.

A tree was reported down on a power line along Highway 261 near the Stuckey Airport.

Snow fell over most of northeast South Carolina, with between a half inch to near 2 inches reported by spotters, coop observers and law enforcement. The snowstorm caused most business to close, and all school districts decided to close their doors for the day. Damages were a result of traffic accidents, with nearly 60 wrecks reported the northeast portion of the state. Record cold air plunged into the state that evening, causing numerous reports of busted water pipes. The local electric company reported record power usage the following morning due to temperatures in the teens in most areas with wind chills near or below zero.
