Lake Charles Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
An EF-2 tornado touched down near near Perkins Pipeline Road and tracked northeast for 12 miles through northern Calcasieu Parish and into southeast Beauregard Parish. Only 4 miles were in Calcasieu Parish and the tornado only damaged trees and power lines before tracking into Beauregard Parish. Max estimated winds were 125 mph.
Heavy rain and high winds affected Calcasieu Parish as Delta moved across the region. Debris from Hurricane Laura slowed runoff from the 10 to 18 inches of rainfall causing flooding. White Oak Park experienced the 5th highest river reading on record. Many structures also had temporary roofs or tarps that were removed during the hurricane from the near 100 mph wind gusts causing more damage. Power was also knocked back out for most of the parish.
There was a mandatory evacuation for the parish. Numerous trees, power lines, transmission lines, and poles were blown down across the parish. All of the parish was without power immediately after the storm. Homes and businesses were damage from trees falling on them, or from the winds. Low-lying areas near downtown Lake Charles flooded from high water due to rainfall. A male of unknown age drowned in a sinking shrimp boat. Twelve persons died in recovery (indirect deaths) from carbon monoxide poisoning, including five in one family in the city of Lake Charles. Other indirect deaths occurred from smoke inhalation, from a head injury after falling off a roof, falling off scaffolding in a refinery, and accident of a tree service vehicle. Wind gusts ranged from 110 to 145 mph across the parish. Storm surge reached 4.65 MHHW at Lake Charles.

A line of thunderstorms associated with a cold front moved through Louisiana during the afternoon of the 13th. Mostly Minor damage in the form of trees and power lines down was noted at several locations.
A microburst affects one location and then lines of severe storms affect Southwest Louisiana two days in a row during late July. A pair of hot and humid days both gave way to lines of thunderstorms late in the day. The storms produced many reports of down trees, down power lines, and a pair of tornadoes.
A powerful low pressure system moved across the northwest Gulf of Mexico during the morning and early afternoon hours on January 9, producing numerous showers and thunderstorms across southwest Louisiana. After the precipitation moved east of the region, a wake low event caused strong east to southeast winds with measured wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph. Scattered reports of damage were received in Calcasieu and Cameron parishes.
Tropical Storm Edouard produced minor wind damage and some coastal flooding along the southwest Louisiana coast before it made landfall just over the stateline in Texas.||The lowest pressure reading in southwest Louisiana occurred in Lake Charles, where the barometer dropped to 1007.8 mb. The strongest wind gusts were mainly 40 to 60 mph across Cameron, Vermilion, and Calcasieu Parishes, including 43 kt (49 mph) at Lake Charles ASOS and 54 kt (62 mph) at the Calcasieu Pass NOS gage. Rainfall totals were between 1 and 3 inches. The highest storm tides were between 4 and 5 ft MLLW, including 5.09 ft at Freshwater Locks near Intracoastal City in Vermilion Parish and 4.31 ft at Calcasieu Pass near Cameron in Cameron Parish.||In Cameron Parish, several mobile homes near Cameron were severely damaged with some having the roofs blown off. Widespread trees and power lines downed between Cameron and Johnson Bayou caused over 2000 customers to lose power. Highway 82 was closed between Holly Beach and Johnson Bayou due to storm surge across the road.||In Calcasieu Parish, a few trees and power lines were downed, resulting in power outages to over 1000 customers. Some mobile homes received minor wind damage to the roofs and skirts. Minor storm surge flooding reached up the Calcasieu River in Lake Charles, where water covered over half the I-10 beach and flooded the yacht club.||In Vermilion Parish, a few trees and power lines were downed. Minor storm surge flooding of low areas in Intracoastal City caused disruptions to marine industries.
Hurricane Humberto made landfall in southeast Texas, and moved into southwest Louisiana the morning of 9/13/07. Humberto was weakening to a tropical storm as it moved northeast across southwest Louisiana. Minor wind damage such as trees and power lines downed was observed in western Calcasieu, western Cameron, Beauregard, Allen, Vernon, and Rapides Parishes. An isolated tornado in an outer rainband occurred in Vermilion Parish, damaging one home, but producing no injuries. Rain totals of 5 to 7 inches were recorded in parts of Beauregard and Vernon Parishes, with amounts of 3 to 5 inches common elsewhere.
