Episodes

November 30, 2022

Strong, non-thunderstorm gradient winds associated with a sharp cold front resulted in multiple downed tree reports and power outages across parts of eastern New York Wednesday afternoon into Thursday (November 30-December 1). Behind the cold front, blustery west winds off Lake Ontario resulted in lake effect snow beginning later in the evening on November and continuing on December 1. There were reports of lake effect snows accumulating more than 7 inches which verified our winter storm warnings for Herkimer and Hamilton Counties on December 1. Power outages were reported in Washington, Warren and Herkimer Counties.||Key Impacts: Power outages, Closed Roads.

April 15, 2021

A pair of low pressure systems brought a mix of rain and high elevation snow to eastern New York beginning the evening of Thursday, April 15th and ending during the early afternoon of Friday, April 16th, 2021. The majority of the heavy, wet snow fell across higher elevations (above 1500 feet), including the southern Adirondacks and eastern Catskills throughout this period, with a mix of rain and snow in the lower elevations. Snowfall totals ranged from 3 to 6 inches in the higher elevations.||Key impacts: tree damage, power outages.

January 10, 2016

A strong area of low pressure lifted across the Great Lakes and towards southern Canada on Sunday, January 10th. A cold front trailing from this storm system brought a line of heavy rain showers and thunderstorms with small hail and gusty winds to the region during the afternoon hours on Sunday, January 10th. Behind this cold front, strong winds developed over the western and southern Adirondacks, western Mohawk Valley and the Lake George-Saratoga Region, as colder air rushed in behind the storm during the evening hours. The strongest winds were estimated up to 60 MPH over northern Herkimer County. A strong pressure gradient resulted in gusty winds continuing through the late evening hours and overnight hours.||As a result of the strong winds, there were a significant number of power outages, especially over the western Adirondacks, with over 2000 customers without power within the Old Forge area alone. In addition, winds downed tree limbs, which caused the temporary closures of several roads through the area. A car was damaged on Route 22 in Granville when the vehicle struck a tree in the road downed by wind. Numerous trees and large branches downed by the wind also damaged a car in the town of Queensbury. According to newspaper reports, trees were downed across the roadway on Route 8 in Horicon, Goodman Road in Johnsburg and Peggy Ann Road in Queensbury. ||Although the strong winds diminished by sunrise on Monday, January 11th, it remained somewhat breezy through the day as the pressure gradient gradually relaxed over the region. Despite this, most of the power outages were restored by the morning hours on Monday, January 11th.

November 1, 2013

A powerful storm system moved from the Great Lakes region towards southern Canada on the early morning of Friday, November 1st. Ahead of this storm, a strong southerly flow allowed for gusty winds of 30 to 60 mph, especially across the higher terrain of the western Adirondacks. As the storm's cold front moved across the region during the morning hours, a line of rain showers and gusty winds accompained the boundary. Behind the cold front, winds switched to a westerly direction and continued to be gusty, with some gusts up to 60 mph. These winds caused damage to trees and power lines across the western Adirondacks and western Mohawk Valley. Utility compaines reported 1116 power outages in Herkimer County and 2528 outages in Hamilton County. Winds diminished by the evening hours, as the pressure gradient began to relax, as the storm system moved away from the area.

March 7, 2008

A rapidly strengthening low pressure system tracked from the central Gulf Coast on Friday March 7th, to the central Appalachians by Saturday morning on March 8th, and reached northern Maine by Sunday morning March 9th.||As cold air to the north of the storm system filtered southward, precipitation in the form of snow, sleet and rain developed late Friday. The precipitation then changed to freezing rain by Saturday morning, which then persisted, heavily at times, into Saturday evening before changing back to light snow.||Significant ice accumulations in excess of one inch occurred from this storm. In addition, gusty winds developed Saturday afternoon. This combination led to widespread power outages and downed trees, with the areas of Hague, Johnsburg, and Queensbury the hardest hit. In these regions, more than 100 power poles were downed, with more than 300 sections of wire also pulled down. In addition, over 1000 trees were estimated to have fallen from the extreme ice accretion.||The large number of downed trees and wires led to numerous road closures, including Route 8, and Route 9N in and near Hague.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);

  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
