Matamoras Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Snowfall combined with winds frequently gusting over 35 mph to create blizzard conditions. The winds were strongest during the afternoon and evening of the 2nd. There were trees knocked down along with power outages and considerable blowing and drifting snow. Whiteout conditions were common. Total snowfall ranged up to 20 inches.
High winds developed during the early afternoon hours on Monday 29th and lasted into early morning hours on Tuesday the 30th from Hurricane Sandy. The high winds knocked downed numerous trees and power lines county-wide. Many of the trees were blocking roads hampering efforts to restore power. Peak sustained winds were estimated close to 40 mph with peak wind gusts estimated at 75 mph mainly over the southeast part of the county. During the height of the storm late in the evening, there were an estimated 31,000 customers without power. It took up to a week for power to be fully restored across the the county.
Numerous trees and power-lines were blown down. Approximately 5,000 residences were without power.
High winds affected the region with gusts of 50 to 60 mph. Numerous trees were blown down and scattered power outages were reported.
Episodes
One lone storm became severe after quickly developing in the southern portions of Pike County in Northeastern Pennsylvania. This storm had strong wind gusts as it passed west of Dingmans Ferry. Storm damage included multiple downed trees and utility wires, which did lead to localized power outages.
A strong cold front moved through Northeast Pennsylvania during the early evening of the 15th, which brought a few lines of showers and thunderstorms through the area. One of these storms became severe in Pike County and produced mainly tree and powerline damage.
A frontal boundary caused showers and thunderstorms to develop during the afternoon of the 22nd across Northeastern Pennsylvania. One of these thunderstorms became severe, causing mainly tree and power line damage in the Lords Valley and Pecks Pond areas in Pike County.
A line of thunderstorms along a strong cold front moved through northeast Pennsylvania during the mid morning hours. Damaging wind gusts in excess of 60 mph knocked down trees and power lines throughout Pike County.
