Episodes
A strong cold front and upper level system approached Vermont during the evening of August 22nd and moved through overnight. Numerous thunderstorms moved across Vermont during the evening with several producing damaging winds in the form of downed trees and power lines.
Daytime heating across the Green Mountains of Vermont, in a moderately unstable airmass caused the development of scattered showers and thunderstorms during the afternoon of the 12th. These storms moved in an uncharacteristic northeast to southwest direction due to a large scale circulation caused by a stalled coastal low in the Gulf of Maine. One storm briefly strengthened in Addison county and produced one inch diameter hail in Shoreham and knocked down trees and powerlines in Bridport.
A weak boundary moved across a very warm, humid and unstable airmass across the southern Champlain Valley of Vermont around midday on the 28th. Numerous showers and thunderstorms developed across the area with a severe thunderstorm that moved across Leicester, which produced damaging winds that knocked down trees (approx. two dozen) and powerlines.
A mid-level atmospheric disturbance and surface cold front moved across a moderately unstable airmass during midday of the 20th. This led to scattered thunderstorms across the Champlain Valley, including a severe thunderstorm that moved through Orwell andproduced damaging winds that knocked down a few trees, large limbs and powerlines.
A surface trough and mid-level atmospheric disturbance encountered a very warm and humid airmass across northern New York around midday on the 19th. This led to the development of a line of thunderstorms, that intensified as they moved into the Champlain Valley by early afternoon. These thunderstorms produced severe weather, including downed trees and powerlines in Bridport and New Haven.
