Episodes
A strong, occluding surface low crossed the Great Lakes on November 27th. After morning rain, instability in the form of around 500 J/kg of mean-layer CAPE was able to develop in the Middle Ohio Valley and advect northeast into northern West Virginia and southwest Pennsylvania. A strongly sheared environment was also present. Strong low-level flow helped to support a damaging-wind threat, while cold temperatures aloft and favorable deep-layer shear also supported large hail, which is unusual for late November. In fact, severe conditions were locally quite signficant, with one report of an 87 MPH gust in a mesovortex, as well as hail reaching two inches in diameter. Many reports of downed trees and power lines were received, with some generally minor structural damage as well. In Perry Township, estimates were that up to 400 vehicles were damaged by hail, with an estimated 1.2 million dollars worth of damage. A similar amount of car damage also likely occurred in Westmoreland County.
On July 16th, a weak positively-tilted trough tracked from the Mississippi River Valley towards the Great Lakes today, while a surface front slowly sagged south from Lake Erie. Diurnal heating in an air mass with rich moisture plus increasing jet support yielded numerous thunderstorms, mainly favoring eastern Ohio and northwest Pennsylvania. Differential heating on the southern fringe of a thicker cloud deck and residual convective outflows provided the catalyst for development. Many reports of tree and power line damage were received. Also, multiple rounds of downpours during the day created flash flooding conditions in portions of Mercer and Venango Counties.
Another in a series of weak mid-level shortwaves moved across the upper Ohio Valley during the afternoon hours. The first storms formed near Interstate 80 around noon, with a broken line of convection then forming towards the southwest during the afternoon hours.||Instability and shear levels were sufficient to create an ideal environment for damaging wind gusts. Many reports of tree and power line damage were received, along with a few instances of structural damage. A roof was blown off of a house in Roscoe, and several structures were damaged by a storm at Sigel. Flash flooding was also reported in Mercer County during the early evening, as a result of multiple thunderstorms moving over the area.
Bands of showers and thunderstorms formed ahead of a crossing cold front around midday on April 26th. Instability this day was not particularly strong. However, a few strong storms did manage to form in Westmoreland County, and these storms were able to mix down strong winds from aloft. Multiple reports of wind damage were received. One house lost a roof on Keystone Park Road near Alexandria, and there were several other reports of downed trees and power lines.
Strong wind gusts occurred just west of the ridges of Westmoreland and Fayette counties as a strong pressure gradient brought sustained southeast winds over 20 MPH, with stronger winds aloft mixed down to create wind gusts over 45 MPH. Scattered damage was to trees and power lines. Large fallen trees and wires blocked the CSX railroad in South Huntingdon Township in Fayette county, with multiple roads blocked across portions of Westmoreland county.
