Onondaga Power Outages Caused by Weather

Events

April 25, 2009 - Thunderstorm Wind

Widely scattered tree damage began 1.75 miles east-northeast of Onondaga and continued just north of due east into Leslie. There was a successive failure of 32 power poles on a north-south powerline about 1 mile west of Leslie. Speaking with an engineer on the scene, his thought was that the wooden poles were not quite robust enough to handle the weight of the 6 conductors and that the failure was preceeded by one or two poles that had started to lean due to wet ground conditions over the past several months. The thunderstorm wind gust was then enough to overload one of the leaning poles causing it to snap near its base. The falling pole then pulled on adjacent poles initiating a cascading failure both north and south of the initial failure. The cascading failure was witnessed by a nearby resident. The wooden poles were being replaced with steel towers.

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
