Power Outage in Ontonagon, MI

Storm total snowfall reports included nearly 14 inches of wet snow at Bergland Dam and 8 inches at Paulding. The heavy wet snow combined with north winds gusting near 30 mph caused power outages to over 600 customers during the event and closed or delayed many schools on the 17th.

Observers at Bergland and Paulding measured nearly 10 inches of dense lake enhanced snow in 12 hours. The wet, heavy snow combined with northeast winds gusting to 35 to 40 mph at times caused damage to trees and power lines which blocked some secondary roads and snowmobile trails. A few city and state businesses and services closed on the 27th due to the storm.

There was a public report of an estimated eight inches of lake effect snow in 18 hours at Ontonagon. The report was from the WLUC-TV6 social media page. The MDOT RWIS site in Ontonagon measured a 59 mph wind gust on the morning of the 5th. In addition, several power outages were reported.

The Ontonagon Emergency Manager reported dozens of trees down in and around the village of Ontonagon, including several down on homes. Power was out in the village for nearly eight hours.

Trees were downed onto a power line. No specifics were known on the diameter or the timing of the event.

A strong EF0 tornado with winds estimated around 85 mph touched down at the River Pines RV Park and Campground and then skipped northeastward across the village lifting on the east side of the Ontonagon Golf Course. Most of the damage was confined to snapped and uprooted trees, snapped power poles, a small flipped boat, minor roof damage, and some structural damage to a garage. There were no injuries.

Extensive damage to power lines was reported in the village of Ontonagon due to the high winds. The Upper Peninsula Power Company reported nearly 150 customers without power into the afternoon of the 19th as relief crews had to be called in from central Wisconsin to help restore full power.

Storm total snowfall included 23.1 inches at Rockland, 18.0 inches at Bergland Dam and 13.7 inches six miles north of Greenland. The heavy wet snow caused power outages, some minor traffic accidents and closed schools in the Ewen-Trout Creek district on the 21st. Extensive tree damage was also reported in the Rockland area.
