Power Outage in Republic, MO

Precipitation started as rain during the early afternoon of January 24th before changing over to snow during the late afternoon, with the snow then continuing into the late morning of January 25th. Widespread snow amounts between 4 and 6 inches fell across the county. A public report of a measured storm total of 6.0 inches of snow was received from Strafford, with a measured 5.7 inches at the NWS Springfield office and 4.5 inches from a public report in Walnut Grove. Roads became snow covered and slippery, with a one vehicle accident resulting in two injuries as a vehicle slid off of Interstate 44 and overturned about 3.5 miles north of Republic. Around 950 power outages also occurred across the county due to the heavy snow. Some schools had early release on January 24th, with numerous schools closed on January 25th.

This was a continuation of the storm from December 31, 2020. Springfield ASOS reported 0.29 inches of flat ice accumulation, with other reports around the county between 0.20 and 0.30 inches with numerous trees down and power outages. Springfield City utilities reported as many as 12,000 customers without power at the peak of the storm. The freezing rain changes to snow in the afternoon with up to an inch of accumulation around the county.

A line of thunderstorms moved from northwest to southeast across Greene County producing straight line winds between 60 and 80 mph. The ASOS at the Springfield/Branson National Airport recorded a 61 mph gust as the storms moved through. Numerous reports were received of large trees uprooted or snapped, large limbs down, power poles and line from the airport, south to Battlefield and southeast to Galloway. Several trees and limbs fell on homes causing minor to moderate roof or siding damage as the storms moved southeast. Roofs were peeled of the north facing sides of homes at Farm Road 135 and Hanover Street, in south Christy Avenue and on West Morning Side Place. A store front on Commercial Street also reported damage and a large sign was blown down.

Multiple reports were received from multiple sources of trees, power lines and poles down across the county. Winds of 60-65 mph were reported along the gust front of a line of severe thunderstorms. The ASOS at the Springfield-Branson National Airport measured a 64 mph gust. A barn in Ash Grove received minor damage. Reports were received from the cities of Ash Grove, Republic, Halltown, Bois D'Arc, Battlefield, Willard, Walnut Grove and Springfield.

This is the continuation of the EF-2 supercell tornado that touched down and tracked from two miles north of Ozark, Missouri to five miles northwest of Rogersville, Missouri. The tornado was on the ground for approximately 20 minutes along its 10.3 mile total track with maximum wind speeds estimated at 134 mph. The tornado crossed out of Christian County along East County Line Road just west of South Farm Road 203 and tracked northeast to five miles northwest of Rogersville before lifting in a forested area just east of the intersection of S Lloyd Drive and East Missouri Route AD in eastern Greene County. As the tornado tracked for eight miles across southwestern Greene County it damaged 90 homes and a large barn. Of the homes, three were reported as total losses. Three horses were killed at the barn from debris. One person was injured but refused treatment. Hundreds of trees were snapped or uprooted and multiple power poles and lines were downed.

Several reports of power poles down in Springfield and numerous power outages occurred as 68 mph thunderstorm wind moved through the city.

Several power poles were reported down across US 160 south of Sunshine Street.

The 911 Center reported that several power poles were down across West Bypass south of Sunshine Street, blocking portions of West Bypass.

A trained spotter reported downed power lines at the intersection of south Illinois Avenue and Melody Lane southwest of Republic. Several large tree branches and a small tree were also reported down in that same area.

A large tree limb snapped off and was lying on a power line near Sunshine Street and US Highway 65. The report was received via social media.

Received reports of power lines down in the Ash Grove area near Lawrence County Roads 1240 and 2020.

Up to a half an inch of ice accumulated on elevated objects and tree limbs across the northern portion of the county during the ice storm. There were up to 4,000 people without power across north Springfield due fallen tree limbs on power lines.

A 42 year old man attempted to drive through a flooded low water crossing on Highway CC at Sims Branch. That person was swept away and drowned. An indirect fatality occurred when a 60 year old man tow truck driver was attempting to retrieve a car off the roadway. He was electrocuted by a downed power line near Farm Road 112 and Farm Road 125.

The Springfield ASOS reported a 52 mph wind gust with several hours of 40 to 50 mph wind gusts. A tree was blown down on to West Republic Road partially blocking the roadway. Numerous power lines and power poles were blown down across the city of Springfield and around Greene County causing power outages. Five electric poles were snapped and blown down near Evangeline University causing Glenstone Ave to be closed for many hours.

A NWS storm survey team determined that straight line thunderstorm winds of 95 to 100 mph caused considerable damage to trees and a couple structures just west of Fellows Lake. Several trees were uprooted or snapped. At least three power poles were snapped. A hay barn and an old abandoned house were destroyed.

A NWS storm survey indicated that an EF-0 tornado touched down near the intersection of East Cairo Street and South Pickwick Avenue. The tornado traveled east along East Cairo Street and lifted at the the intersection of East Cairo Street and Glenstone. The tornado caused several large tree branches to be blown down and damage to roofs to several houses along with several power lines to be blown down. Several windows to homes and businesses were broken or blown out. At least two businesses had roof and window damage. Winds were estimated around 60 mph with a path width of 50 yards and about half a mile length.

Multiple power outages were reported in south Republic and wind gusts up to 60 mph.

A tree was down on a house at Grant and Web Street causing significant roof damage. Several trees fell on cars. Several yard fences were blown down. Several area firework vendors had their tents destroyed and lost of firework inventory. The estimated cost of damages for the entire Republic area including trees down, power lines, and structures will be estimated in this storm report.

Downburst winds gusts knocked down approximately 10 power poles north of Springfield near the intersection of Highway WW and Farm Road 159.

A traffic signal was blown over blocking traffic at the intersection of Battlefield and Freemont. There were scattered power outages reported around town.

A 14 inch diameter tree fell on a power line and blocked a portion of Farm Road 84.

Thunderstorm winds downed four power poles along with transmission lines near the intersection of Highway 243 and Highway D.

Downburst wind gusts snapped a power pole near the intersection of Farm Road 170 and Farm Road 93.

Sixty to 90 mph winds caused widespread tree, power pole, and structural damage across much of Greene County. Major roof damage to schools included Willard North Elementary, Fair Grove High School, Ash Grove High School, Bois D' Arc Elementary, and Glendale High School. Four students were injured at Fair Grove High School as debris fell into the school while the roof was peeling off. Portions of the elementary and middle school were completely destroyed, along with some light poles on the baseball field. The Ebenezer fire station and fire trucks sustained major damage. Several billboards west of Springfield along Interstate 44 were destroyed. The Sam's Club on Highway 65 and Sunshine had a temporary wall that was peeled off of the building. The Willard High School baseball field had major damage to the press box and dugouts. At Fellows Lake, the marina was broken into three pieces, and jammed the boat docks up onto the boat ramp. Thousands of residences across Greene County lost power up to three days.

Strong winds downed trees, damaged roofs and caused widespread power outages.

Wind gusts knocked over a few trees across Greene County. Only a few power outages resulted from these high winds.

Severe thunderstorm wind gusts knocked a large tree into some power lines near the Intersection of Farm Road 219 and Highway D.

Major tree and power line damage occurred within a neighborhood in east Springfield. This damage was due to the rear flank downdraft winds of a tornadic supercell. Several homes also experienced damage from large trees falling into them.

Sleet and freezing rain accumulations of one half to one inch across the county were observed. Heavier accumulations up to two inches fell across southeast Greene County. The ice accumulations resulted in power outages to as many as five thousand residents.

High winds associated with a rear flank downdraft downed power lines across Blue Springs Road. Minor siding and roof damage was also reported to homes just north of the city hall.

Ice accumulations averaged around one half of an inch on elevated exposed surfaces. Power outages were minimal as a few trees and power lines were damaged.

The worst natural disaster to ever impact Greene County including the city of Springfield occurred from major ice accumulations associated with this storm. Two inches of freezing rain accumulated on exposed objects causing catastrophic tree and power line damage. Several residents of Springfield and Greene County experienced power outages that lasted over three weeks. Most of the ice accumulations occurred on Friday night January 12th, however, two other episodes of ice accumulations occurred on the 13th and 14th. Damages including debris removal were estimated at 121.69 million.

Severe thunderstorm wind gusts downed several power lines near the community of Battlefield.

Low pressure deepened over eastern Colorado and moved eastward along a stationary front into southern Illinois through the morning of the 9th before the front moved south of the Ozarks. Strong to severe storms moved over the region during the early morning of the 9th. Hail up the golf ball size occurred in Barry County southeast of Cassville, and several locations along the south of Highway 60 reported wind damage to trees and powerlines. Several rounds of rainfall led to flooding near Ava and Mountain Grove in Douglas County, near Sycamore and Hardenville in Ozark County, and near Bradleyville in Taney County.

A storm system brought primarily freezing rain to the region beginning overnight January 16 and then transitioning to all rain by the afternoon of January 17. Flat ice accumulations ranged from a trace up to 0.30���. Some sporadic power outages were reported. Some snow was also reported, but little if any accumulation.

Two separate Low Top Supercell thunderstorm complex's moved through the Ozarks. The first, during the early morning hours produced hail up to golf balls in size, damaging straight line winds and an EF-0 tornado as it moved through the Missouri Ozarks. The EF-0 tornado downed trees and power lines northwest of Camdenton Missouri. The second complex later produced several reports of large hail.

A pulse thunderstorm developed over southern Greene County, producing wind damage from the Wilson's Creek National Battlefiled to Republic. Trees, power poles, and several road signs were damaged. Other storms developed in Barry and Barton counties, producing marginally severe weather.

Scattered severe thunderstorms developed during the late afternoon and early evening of 8 July. These storms mainly produced damaging downburst winds, knocking over trees and power lines. Approximately 30 boat docks near Grand Glaze Bridge were damaged overturned on Lake of the Ozarks from a more intense microburst.

60 to 65 mph winds caused damage around Bois D Arc. In addition to numerous trees and power poles blown down, roof damage was reported along with dime size hail.

A microburst moved across northern parts of Springfield. It downed numerous large trees and power lines.

An F1 tornado touched down near the Southwest Missouri State University campus at the intersection of Grand and National. The damage path was 100 yards wide and one half mile long as it moved north northeast across National Street. The tornado downed trees, blew down power lines, blew out numerous windows, and tore off a roof. 750 people lost power for more than 18 hours. Only minor injuries were reported.

Numerous power lines were blown down from Sacville to Fair Grove.

Thunderstorm winds downed numerous trees and power lines in central and southeast Springfield.

Thunderstorm winds produced numerous reports of damage in and around the city of Springfield. Most of the reports consisted of downed trees, tree limbs, and power lines. The Springfield-Branson Regional Airport had a measured wind gust of 63 mph.
