Scranton Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Wind damage from a microburst started near Jubilee Road near Lake Kahagon in Madison Township. Many trees and power lines were blown down. Several homes were damaged due to fallen trees.
Strong thunderstorm winds knocked down numerous trees and power poles in the hill section of Scranton.
Snowfall accumulated between 6 and 12 inches. High winds caused near blizzard conditions at times and scattered power outages.
High winds developed during the early evening hours on Monday 29th and lasted into early morning hours on Tuesday the 30th from Hurricane Sandy. The high winds knocked downed numerous trees and power lines over the higher terrain areas of the county. A roof was blown off a home in Jermyn. Peak sustained winds were estimated between 30 and 40 mph with peak wind gusts estimated at 70 mph. The lower elevations including much of the Scranton area had weaker winds and less impact from this storm. During the height of the storm late in the evening, there were an estimated 15,000 customers without power, mainly over the higher terrain. It took a few days for power to be fully restored across the county.
Episodes
Scattered thunderstorms developed ahead of a cold front during the afternoon of the 6th across portions of Northeast Pennsylvania. A few of these storms became severe with damaging winds. Mainly tree and powerline damage was observed.
A weak disturbance moved through Northeastern Pennsylvania, producing some showers and thunderstorms. One storm in Susquehanna County became severe and knocked down trees and powerlines.
Thunderstorms developed along and south of a stalled frontal boundary in Northeast Pennsylvania during the afternoon hours of the 29th. Some of these thunderstorms became severe, causing mainly tree and power line damage in Luzerne and Lackawanna counties.
A cold front dropped south into New York State the afternoon and evening of the 18th. This front eventually moved into northern Pennsylvania during the overnight hours from the 18th to the 19th. This front triggered a round of strong to severe thunderstorms which moved through central New York and northeast Pennsylvania. The thunderstorms produced damaging winds which knocked down many trees and power lines.
A complex area of low pressure tracked from the Ohio Valley and southeast United States from the afternoon of the 1st and intensified into a major winter storm over Long Island by the morning of the 2nd. This intense winter storm remained nearly stationary until the late evening of the 2nd. The storm brought rain at first to northeast Pennsylvania during the overnight hours the 2nd, which changed to snow by sunrise on the 2nd. The snow fell heavy at times through the day on the 2nd. High winds combined with the heavy snow in the afternoon leading to blizzard conditions in Wayne and Pike Counties of Pennsylvania. Winds were gusting to 50 mph. The rest of northeast Pennsylvania saw near blizzard conditions during this time. The snow tapered down in the evening as the winds continued to cause near whiteout conditions, knocking down numerous trees and power lines from Wayne to Pike Counties. There was an estimated 42,000 customers without power, especially in the Poconos. Power was out in some areas for more than one week. During the height of the storm, both Interstates 81 and 84 were closed. Snowfall totals ranged from 8 to 16 inches with up to 20 inches in Pike County.
