Power Outage in Sedalia, MO

Power line poles were snapped south of La Monte along MO-127.

Light to moderate freezing rain formed early morning on New Year's Day. This freezing rain quickly accreted between a quarter to three quarters inch before sunrise. Shortly after sunrise the freezing rain switched to light snow, which persisted for the bulk of the remaining day time hours. The snow did not accumulate more than 1 to 3 inches, but on top of the ice accretion created winter storm conditions. Mostly scattered power outages and vehicle accidents were the impacts, but being a holiday, road traffic was likely light.

A large tree of unknown size or condition was down. Power lines were also brought down and a roof was torn off of a barn near Nelson.

Significant wind damage from the north side of Sedalia to near the Sedalia airport was reported. A roof was ripped off a business on the north side of Sedalia. Four power poles were snapped further east. Highway signs at US 765 and MO 765 and a barn on Griessen Road north of the airport were heavily damaged.

Trained weather spotters from across the area reported between .20 and .50 of freezing rain on December 21. The highest amount of ice accumulation in the area came out of Clinton, Missouri, where .45 of ice accumulated. Another report of .30 of ice accumulation came from Booneville, in nearby Boone County. Once the freezing rain ended light snow accumulated throughout the area during the overnight hours. Between 1 and 3 inches of snow fell on top of the ice accumulation. Some power outages occurred, but no widespread effects were reported from this ice storm.

Numerous tents and power lines were reported to have been blown down at the State Fair grounds.

At 1122CST an EF2 tornado touched down 2.7 miles south southeast of Sedalia. The tornado traveled north, and lifted 0.7 miles southeast of Sedalia at 1128CST. Heavy damage to several businesses, was observed along highway 65, with 70 mobile homes in two different mobile home parks, destroyed or heavily damaged. Several homes were also damaged or destroyed. A tanker truck was overturned. Power poles were snapped off. Twenty people suffered minor injuries.

Thunderstorm wind gusts were estimated up to 60 mph, with power outages reported in Sedalia.

Shingles were blown off several roofs, and there were a few powerlines down in Sedalia.

One quarter to one half inch of ice was reported across the county. Several tree limbs and power lines were reported down.

Gustnado briefly touched down and produced damage to an older barn. A power pole was sheared off near U.S. Highway 65.
