Power Outage in Snyder, TX

A thunderstorm moved across Scurry County and produced wind damage near Snyder. A storm survey was done and the first indications of damage were southwest of Snyder, just west of Highway 351 and approximately 2 miles south of Highway 180. From this location, the swath of damage extended northeastward across the city of Snyder for nearly 4 miles. The NWS survey team found the damage to residential and business structures indicative of that produced by winds of 85 to 100 mph. With no circulations evident, the event has been determined to be a straight-line wind event. Multiple power lines were broken and RVs were toppled over. The time of the event was estimated from radar. The cost of damage is a very rough estimate.

A thunderstorm moved across Scurry County and produced wind damage in Snyder. A damage survey was conducted and it was determined that the wind speed ranged from 60 to 85 mph. There was damage to power lines, telephone poles, and trees. The cost of damage is a very rough estimate.

The Scurry County S.O. reported 1/4-1/2 inch of ice accumulation from a mix of freezing rain and sleet. Roads are icy and power outages have occurred in Snyder the night of 11/23-11/24 and this morning, 11/24.

Strong westerly surface winds affected portions of West Texas as a powerful upper trough passed by just north of the area. Winds were enhanced by evaporative cooling due to rain showers.

Very strong thunderstorm winds impacted the city of Snyder. The West Texas Mesonet site recorded a peak gust of 82 mph. Widespread damage occurred across the city. At least 50 power poles were downed by these high winds. A residental and commercial carport were blown over. In addition, several commercial and residental roofs received substantial damage. In one instance, the roof from a downtown business was tossed into an adjacent bank parking lot, causing damage to the front of a bank. I another case, portions of an irregular shaped roof were blow onto cars in a nearby lot.

This tornado damage was indicative of EF0 intensity. Based on radar imagery and storm speed, primary indications are that the tornado path extended to the west of Farm to Market Road 1609 for approximately 4-6 miles. The width of the tornado is estimated at 50 yards.

The Snyder Fire Department reported ice accumulations of one quarter of an inch in locations around the city. In addition, the Snyder Police Department reported five accidents as a result of the icy roads. Ice also downed power lines in the city of Snyder. |Up to 14 poles and 20 to 30 strands of wire were downed in the southeastern portion of the county.

Severe gradient wind gusts were measured by the Texas Mesonet sites near Big Spring and Snyder. The winds resulted in the downing of several power poles along Farm to Market Road 1788 in western Midland County.The severe winds resulted in multiple reports of downed power lines and poles in the Snyder vicinity. The local newspaper reported that a vehicle was damaged by a road sign which became airborne, and that a tin roof was blown off of a building.

Severe thunderstorm winds uprooted trees and blew down power lines in Snyder.

Damaging thunderstorm winds were reported in an area from near Knapp, to the city of Snyder. One power pole was blown down by the winds, along with several large trees with two feet diameter trunks.

Reports from the local newspaper indicate that strong winds from a thunderstorm resulted in damage to trees and power lines in the city of Snyder. Local officials responded to no less than four reports of large trees blocking roadways after being blown down by the storm. Based on a summary of the reports...it seems likely a wet microburst affected the city.

Strong mid level winds at the base of a powerful upper level trough raked Southeast New mexico and West Texas with strong westerly surface winds.

Numerous severe thunderstorms developed on the evening of the 4th across the Permian Basin. The most intense activity was across the eastern basin...where three supercell storms moved parallel to Interstate 20 producing large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes. Damage resulting from a weak tornado was observed on Highway 350 southwest of Ira in southern Scurry County. Two tornadoes were observed in northern Mitchell County just before midnight...along with hail to the size of baseballs. Damage from the tornadoes was limited to downed power poles. As the dryline retreated west across the basin...other storms formed in the western basin. These storms were less organized, but produced dime size hail. Total dollar estimates of the damage are in the 95K to 100K range.
