Power Outage in Westmoreland, KS

Power outages and 12 to 24 inch tree limbs down.

Tree branches larger than 12 inches in diameter were snapped. Power is also out across the town. A barn door was ripped off just north of Blaine.

Reports of one half to around three quarters of an inch of ice accumulation on elevated surfaces including trees and vehicles. Reports of large limbs down across the county and power outages from dispatch.

Strong thunderstorms brought periods of strong winds and heavy rain to portions of Pottawatomie County on the afternoon of Aug 10, 2010. These storms produced strong winds which broke or damaged 6 power poles near a landfill along Wheaton Road near Louisville. The Kansas Department of Transportation reported a roof was torn off a barn-style metal shed located near Highway 24 and Onaga Road. Many spotters throughout the area reported 60 to 70 mph winds with this storm.

Ice accumulation estimates ranged from around half of an inch, to three quarters of an inch across the county. The city of Wamego reported 45 downed power lines the morning of the 11th. Belvue, Onaga, and Olsburg were left completely without power by the time the freezing rain ended, and Westmoreland was left completely without water. Four hundred Westmoreland residents were still without power the night after the freezing rain fell. Local firefighters responded to several fires, caused by downed power lines and stressed transformers. Nearly every street in Westmoreland was littered with tree branches, tree limbs, and power lines. Shelters were set up across the county. Two days after the freezing rain ended, 5,000 county residents were still without power including all of St. George, Onaga, Westmoreland, Olsburg, Wheaton, Emmet, and Havensville. Tree limbs and power lines continued to fall over the course of the week after the event. Phone outages were also reported across the area.

Tornado occurred at the Elbo lake community east of Manhattan. Many large trees were damaged or blown over...powerlines were downed...a boat blown across the lake and at least four buildings sustained damage...primarily from trees falling on them.
