Wharton Power Outages Caused by Weather

Events

June 29, 2012 - Thunderstorm Wind

An intense line of thunderstorms or Derecho moved across Wyandot County during the afternoon of June 29th causing extensive damage. Winds were estimated to be as much as 80 mph. The southwest corner of the county was the hardest hit. Over 50 percent of residents lost power during this event. Power was not completely restored for several days. Hundreds, if not thousands of trees were downed across the county along with many utility poles forcing the closure of dozens of roads and streets. Damage to homes and buildings was also extensive. Dozens of homes and buildings lost roofing or siding with many other homes damaged by fallen trees. Clean up costs were extensive. The clean up was hampered by an ongoing heat wave with afternoon temperatures in the upper 90s. Significant crop losses are also expected. Damage from this storm was comparable to the remnants of Hurricane Ike in September 2008.

After this last storm and being told it may be more than a week for everyone to get their power back, it's time for Wharton to get with the 21st Century.... I love this town, however; knowing there is a way to avoid these terrible outages with doing away with an antiquated above ground system and the town just trudges along knowing full well we will get hit again just is not right... put our taxes to work with something all Wharton residents will truly appreciate... apply for federal funding, do something, there has to be a way to upgrade this old system...we are seniors and cannot deal with the heat . We have no choice but to spend the next 2 or 3 days at a hotel or motel. Something, at our age and financial situation can I'll afford but have no choice... Thanks for listening..

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
