The National Weather Service conducted a storm survey in southwest Cass County and concluded that the damage was the result of an EF0 tornado. The tornado first touched down on the southwest side of Hughes Springs where several trees were snapped near FM 250. The storm then continued on a northeast trajectory downing trees onto powerlines and removing shinges from a home along FM 2984. As the storm continued to move northeast, several trees were uprooted, some large in nature, with shingles removed from a business along the east side of town. The tornado lifted just after downing 6 large pecan trees near a resident on FM 2992.|One of the large limbs from the trees punctured the back of his roof and damaged a storage building nearby. Estimated wind speeds were 75-80 mph.

Several trees were snapped along SR 155 Southwest of Linden, Texas. Powerlines were downed in that area as well. Several small trees and large branches were downed along CR 1574 as well. Maximum winds are estimated at 60-65 mph.

This storm developed about 100 yards inside the Morris County line, very near the Cass County line, about 5 miles northwest of Hughes Springs. This tornado first touched down just west of County Line Road near FM 130 in eastern Morris County, continuing east across CR 2865, before lifting near FM 250 north of FM 130. Numerous trees were uprooted and snapped, with power lines downed as well. This tornado was rated an EF1, with winds of around 90 mph.

The remnants of Hurricane Ike resulted in tropical storm force winds across portions of Cass County in northeast Texas. Scattered power outages were reported throughout the county with numerous trees and power lines downed. A few large trees were reported down in the town of Atlanta, Texas on Sycamore Street with a wood fence downed on Melrose Street. Tree damage was particularly bad in the town of Linden, Texas as well. Another tree was downed on a home at the intersection of Morse Road and Indian Hills Drive in Atlanta, Texas.

Power outages were reported throughout the city with wind damage on West Main Street. A few large trees and numerous large limbs were felled across various parts of the city.

After trying to recover from an ice storm earlier in the month, another even more devastating ice storm struck the northern third of northeast Texas. Freezing rain resulted in ice accumulations ranging from 1/4 to 3 inches which devastated the middle Red River Valley counties of northeast Texas. Tens of thousands of trees and numerous power lines were either broken or felled from the weight of the ice leaving vast regions of northeast Texas without power for weeks. Bowie, Cass and Red River counties were declared disaster areas.

An artic airmass spilled southward out of the central plains and into the lower Mississippi Valley. This cold surface airmass was overrun by a warm and humid airmass which combined with a strong upper level storm system across west Texas. The result was widespread freezing rain. Ice accumulations on average of one inch were common north and west of a line from Mansfield and Arcadia to Farmerville LA. An estimated 235,000 residents lost power from snapped power lines. Upwards of 29 transmission lines atop "H" shaped steel towers were snapped due to the weight of the ice. One man was killed and another injured when a tree limb laden with ice fell on them. Numerous traffic accidents were reported from ice covered roads and bridges. In the Shreveport - Bossier metroplex more than 205 streets were either blocked or partially blocked by limbs and fallen trees. Much of northwest Louisiana was declared a disaster area.

A strong upper level trough moved out of the southern Great Basin and into the lower Mississippi Valley sweeping Artic Air southward to the Gulf Coast. Moisture laden air from the Gulf overran the freezing surface temperatures producing ice across the northern half of northeast Texas. Ice accumulations of one to four inches fell across most of the area with the ice and snow accumulations near 8 inches. Thousands of homes were left without power due to ice covered tree limbs falling and snapping powerlines. Also, hundreds of chicken houses were destroyed and several 7 million chicks were killed. Barns, carports, and weak structure homes suffered collapse from the weight of the ice and snow. Traffic accidents were numerous and I-30 west of Texarkana had to be shut down when the freeway became impassable.

Ambient temperatures in excess of 100 degrees across Northeast Texas, very low relative humidity values, extreme drought conditions and strong northeasterly winds in association with Tropical Storm Lee making landfall in south central Louisiana were all the ingredients needed for critical wildfire danger across the region. A wildfire started between Avinger and Jefferson, Texas and burned nearly 41,000 acres of timberland and grassland before it was declared contained on September 13th. A total of 91 structures were burned which included homes, outbuildings and vehicles. Hundreds of firefighters were called in to battle the 12 day wildfire which began when a limb hit a powerline causing sparks. Schools were closed for a few days in southern Cass and Marion Counties. There was one firefighter that was burned while battling the wildfire. This wildfire, which became known as the Bear Creek Fire, involved 17 different agencies including the Texas Forest Service, Texas Parks and Wildlife and fire departments from Florida, South Carolina and Alabama. The Texas Forest Service used helicopter drops from nearby Lake O The Pines to help battle the fire. A command center was set up to coordinate fire fighting efforts at the Pruitt Lake Missionary Baptist Church on Hwy. 155 in Avinger as well as the Pinecrest Baptist on Hwy. 59 in Linden, Texas. More than 8,000 cases of sports drinks and 10,000 cases of water were provided for all the fire fighters during the event.
