Power Outage in Baldwin, GA

The Banks County Emergency Manager reported trees and power lines blown down in the Gillsville area from Herbert Segars Road to around the intersection of Highway 51 and John Morris Road.

NWS storm survey found an area of straight line wind damage in extreme southwest Habersham County. Numerous trees along with a couple of power poles were blown down from Heads Ferry Rd to just southwest of Duncan Bridge Rd. Some minor structural damage also occurred to a few homes.

A wind gust of 51 mph was measured in the Banks Crossing area. Radar estimated between 2 and 3 inches of rain fell across the county with 2.25 inches measured near Banks Crossing. No injuries were reported.

The Banks County Emergency Manager reported numerous trees blown across the county from several hours of sustained 30 to 35 MPH winds. Gusts were estimated over 40 MPH. Multiple roads were blocked and power lines downed.

Freezing rain began just after sunrise on the morning of the 25th, accumulating on elevated surfaces, bridges, and overpasses through the morning and afternoon hours. Widespread amounts of 0.10 to 0.25 inches of freezing rain were reported. The slick roads resulted in numerous automobile accidents and power outages across the area.

A cold Canadian air mass remained over the state in the wake of the Arctic front which moved north and central Georgia earlier in the week. A weak disturbance aloft moved over the cold air mass early on the 22nd and brought light precipitation to north Georgia. Temperatures in some areas of the far northwest and favorable cold air wedge areas of the northeast were just below freezing. As a result, most of the precipitation during the early morning fell as light freezing rain. A light coating of ice was observed in a few north Georgia counties, mainly on trees and power lines. Ice accumulations were all observed to be less than 1/4 inch. Banks, Cherokee, Dade, Dawson, Forsyth, Lumpkin, and White counties all reported minor accumulations of ice, mainly on trees and power lines. Dade county reported the worst conditions with some roads closed and schools canceled.

The Banks County Emergency Management Director reported that up to 15 trees were blown down across the county, mainly the eastern and southern portions. Three trees were down on power lines. A portion of the Old Navy sign at the Banks Crossing Outlet Mall was damaged by the strong winds.

All together, 37 roads were blocked across the county because of downed trees, including Georgia Highways 198, 441, and 51. Numerous power outages were also reported across the county.
