Power Outage in Cleveland, GA

Winds gusted between 35 and 50 mph for several hours. The White County Emergency Manager reported over 300 trees and numerous power lines blown down across the county.

The Emergency Manager reported Roy Powers Road was washed out due to high water conditions on Brasstown Creek. Radar estimates indicate that 6 to 8 inches of rain occurred in the area, resulting in the flash flooding.

A vehicle struck the downed tree on Dorsey Brothers road and a tree fell on a mobile home on Independent Drive, no injuries were reported.

Law enforcement measured a 57 MPH wind gust at their office in Cleveland. No injuries were reported.

A communications official with White County Fire/Rescue reported at least a quarter of an inch of ice accumulation on trees, power lines and other elevated surfaces due to freezing rain and drizzle. A trained spotter reported between a half inch and one inch of sleet. Numerous tree and power lines were downed and over 4000 residents were without power at the peak of the storm.

Freezing rain began just after sunrise on the morning of the 25th, accumulating on elevated surfaces, bridges, and overpasses through the morning and afternoon hours. Widespread amounts of 0.10 to 0.25 inches of freezing rain were reported. The slick roads resulted in numerous automobile accidents and power outages across the area.

The public reports that at least 10 trees were down and several power poles were either down or bent over through the central part of the county.

A cold Canadian air mass remained over the state in the wake of the Arctic front which moved through the north and central Georgia earlier in the week. A weak disturbance aloft moved over the cold air mass early on the 22nd and brought light precipitation to north Georgia. Temperatures in some areas of the far northwest and favorable cold air wedge areas of the northeast were just below freezing. As a result, most of the precipitation during the early morning fell as light freezing rain. A light coating of ice was observed in a few north Georgia counties, mainly on trees and power lines. Ice accumulations were all observed to be less than 1/4 inch. Banks, Cherokee, Dade, Dawson, Forsyth, Lumpkin, and White counties all reported minor accumulations of ice, mainly on trees and power lines. Dade county reported the worst conditions with some roads closed and schools canceled.

The Times of Gainesville reported that several trees were down in and around the city of Cleveland. Most of the damage was concentrated in the area around Georgia 75 and Georgia 115. A couple of homes were damaged by downed trees and one tree fell on a Ford Explorer in a parking lot of a boutique shop. Power outages were widespread across the city with about 500 people in the county left without power.

A damage survey conducted by the National Weather Service concluded that the F0 tornado that touched down just south of Lula continued on a nearly 11-mile long north-northwest track crossing into White county near Rogers Mill. The tornado continued for approximately three miles into White county before finally lifting about one mile west-southwest of Mossy Creek just across Georgia Highway 254. The tornado tracked through a very rural portion of White county and as such, damage was confined almost entirely to trees and a few power lines. Most of the damage was located along New Bridge and Duncan Bridge Roads. No reports of damage to structures or buildings were received from White county. The overall damage path of this tornado was 11 miles long and 50 yards wide. The portion within White county was approximately three miles long and still 50 yards wide.

The public reported that strong thunderstorm winds blew down a few trees and a couple of power lines in the Leaf community along Pless Road.

The White County Emergency Management Director reported that an F0 tornado touched down in the southwest corner of White county near the Hall county line at the Wauka Valley Farms area, then skipped along the ground on a path to the north-northwest for approximately five miles, terminating in the Town Creek Road area of western White county. The tornado path width was determined to be approximately 1/8 to 1/4 mile wide. Considerable damage was reported at the Wauka Valley Farms facility. Hundreds of trees were twisted off, blown over, or uprooted. Two barns were destroyed from downed trees and wind damage. The roof of one barn was found a considerable distance downstream. In addition, wooden two-by-fours were discovered nearly a mile away from the farm. One home sustained room damage and a number of trees and power lines were also down along Town Creek road, approximately five miles west of Cleveland at the end of the damage path area, but the majority of the damage was done in the Wauka Valley Farms area. Overall, in excess of 200 trees were down in the southwest part of the county. The tornado formed on the tail end of a feeder band associated with the remnants of Hurricane Dennis.

A typical summertime pattern continued across north and central Georgia as high pressure aloft drifted just west of the area. The storms were very small, but with high temperatures near 100 across the area, the dissipating storms were capable of wind damage. Such occurred with one small storm in Oconee county which produced a downburst and brought down a number of trees and power lines in the area.
