Power Outage in Fergus Falls, MN

Five power poles were snapped or cracked in Amor Township. Time estimated based on radar.

This tornado began about 2 miles west southwest of Battle Lake, MN and tracked to the north until 7:34 pm where it lifted 2 miles north northeast of Battle Lake, MN. One single-wide trailer was flipped. Numerous spruce, poplar, and ash trees were snapped or uprooted. Metal roofing was blown off of storage near the airport. Peak winds were estimated at 100 mph, giving this tornado an EF1 rating, with a path length of 3.5 miles. A couple of power poles were also damaged along the path.

Roofing was torn off of a hay shed, two roadside power poles were snapped, and numerous large tree branches and limbs were broken at two farmsteads. Farmsteads were across the road from each other. Time estimated based on radar and nearby wind sensors.

The tornado was wrapped in downburst winds and rain, with a total track length of about 11 miles. The tornado uprooted or snapped numerous trees in shelterbelts along its path. It also snapped a few power poles and tore the roof off and collapsed the walls at a welding and manufacturing shop near the Fergus Falls airport. Peak winds were estimated at 100 mph.

The tornado, wrapped in downburst winds and heavy rain, tracked intermittently to the east-northeast for nearly 18 miles. The tornado crossed Pickerel and Long lakes, and ended just before Rush Lake. It uprooted or snapped numerous trees and power poles. In the northeast corner of Long Lake, it tumbled several travel trailers, tore roof sections off a pole shed, and tumbled an irrigation system. Peak winds were estimated at 105 mph.

A tornado touched down near the Henning airport and tracked southeast for roughly a quarter of a mile across a cut hay field. The tornado threw hay onto power lines and across a portion of county road 134. Peak winds were estimated at 70 mph.

Tree limbs and power lines were blown down in Fergus Falls. Rotation was also reported with the storm.

A power power and a light pole were blown down. Several miles away, the Fergus Falls airport reported a 55 mph wind gust.

Large branches were broken down. Power outages were reported between Vergas and Big McDonald Lake.

Strong winds knocked down several trees, one falling on the top of a car. Several roads were blocked by trees and large branches. Power outages also occurred.

Power outages spread across portions of western Otter Tail County as large tree branches fell on power lines.

The roof of an open bay lumber storage building was uplifted and flipped eastward onto Junius Avenue. The section of roofing remained largely intact as it flipped and therefore it impacted and broke two adjacent power poles.

This tornado was enshrouded in heavy rain, large hail, and damaging downburst winds. Numerous large trees were knocked down or uprooted along this path. At least 6 wooden power poles were snapped off. One farmstead lost a section of a large pole shed. A nearby farmstead had a concrete silo toppled. This tornado crossed part of the damage field from a larger June 17th tornado north of Bluffton in Bluffton Township.

This tornado tracked briefly to the north-northeast before a wet rear-flank downdraft overtook it as viewed and recorded by multiple storm chase teams. A second and more powerful tornado eventually formed from the parent supercell thunderstorm and impacted the the community of Wadena. Very heavy rains and damaging downdraft winds obscured the overall tornado path. However large tree limbs were broken down and smaller trees were uprooted by the event suggesting peak winds to 90 mph.

Irrigation system center pivots, trees, and power poles were heavily damaged in a roughly 2 mile path to about 7 miles north-northwest of Perham. A metal grain bin was blown down along with a small silo and several smaller farm buildings. Peak winds were estimated at around 105 mph.

The tornado touched down west of Interstate 94 and tracked nearly due east for about 2 miles into the northeast corner of Fergus Falls by 6:20 PM CDT. The tornado knocked down power lines and numerous tree branches. It also scattered roofing materials through a field. Peak winds were estimated at 90 mph, and the tornado's maximum width reached 50 yards.

Several trees were blown down, causing numerous power outages. One tree fell on a house along Channing Avenue.

A tree blew over onto a power line, knocking out electricity to 300 Lake Alice residents.

A tree fell on a car and blocked traffic. Another tree fell on a power line, causing a brief fire.

Power lines were snapped off by the strong wind.

Several trees were blown down, one falling on a power line. A traffic signal was torn off a pole and two cars had minor damage from falling trees.

Dozens of trees were blown down and power was lost. One tree fell on a van, crushing it.

Trees and branches were blown down on the east side of Fergus Falls. The entire northeast side of town also lost power.

Numerous trees were blown over along highway 78 near Balmoral Golf Course. The highway was closed while the trees and some downed power lines were cleaned up. At the golf course, 150 trees were blown down. One tree fell on the cart shed.

Intermittent tree damage occurred from the east side of Lake Lizzie to Dent. Power outages occurred from trees falling on power lines. On West McDonald Lake, a 30 foot mobile home was overturned against an oak tree that was split in half. A tree also fell on a boat, destroying it. At Spirit Lake, 20 trees were damaged at a resort, some falling on resort cabins. A dock was also damaged. At Hoffman Lake, property owners reportedly saw the tornado coming across the lake. Many trees fell on homes or other property.

Strong winds destroyed a hangar, damaged an airplane and boat inside, and knocked out power to the airport. The airport beacon and beacon tower were also knocked over.

Lightning struck a power pole and started a fire. This knocked out electrical service to a portion of Fergus Falls.

The strong wind knocked down trees and power lines. The city of Fergus Falls was without power for several hours. 30 to 40 homes sustained damage and many signs were knocked over.
