Power Outage in Gilmer, TX

Numerous reports of power lines downed across Upshur County.

Numerous trees were blown down throughout Upshur County, including Crabapple and Crepe Myrtle Road just south of Pritchett, Willow Oak Road, Mockingbird Lane, Highway 154, FM 556, and Silver Maple Road. Trees and power lines were downed on Aspen Trail near Pritchett. Two trees fell onto power lines near the Harmony School.

An EF-1 tornado with maximum estimated winds between 90-95 mph touched down across a wooded area in a pastureland just west of Juniper Road near the Sabine River south of Highway 80, just west of the Gladewater city limits in far Southern Upshur County. Through the path length, this tornado remained around treetop level, shearing the tops off of numerous trees while also snapping and uprooting trees, where trees had fallen on a mobile home, a motor home, and a pickup truck on Juniper Road. The tornado traveled northeast across Highway 80 to near Locust Road and Green Road where additional trees were partially snapped or uprooted. A few shingles were also blown off of the back of a home on Green Road. The tornado lifted on White Oak Road about one-quarter mile southeast of Locust Road. It should be noted that the parent supercell thunderstorm produced damaging straight-line winds that also uprooted a tree on West Gay Avenue and downed a tree on power lines on West Sheppard Drive in North Gladewater, while also snapping large limbs on Lake Drive and Philips Springs Road just east of Lake Gladewater.

Several large trees were downed along with powerlines across the western portion of Upshur County. Several areas were without power.

Numerous trees were downed on Hwy. 155 between Gilmer and Hwy. 259. Also, high winds tore down two H-frame transmission structures in Gilmer resulting in power outages to over 3500 customers.

The remnants of Tropical Storm Ike resulted in numerous trees and power lines downed across all of the county. Widespread power outages were reported across the county as well during the height of the storm which continued after the storm had passed. Upwards of 31 power poles were broken across the county. A new restaurant in Diana, Texas was crushed by a fallen tree. Another tree crushed a large shed in the Big Sandy area. A home was stuck by a tree along Hwy. 155 south in Big Sandy but no injuries were reported.

Several trees and power lines were downed across the county. Several trees were uprooted on Brooksey and the east end of Madelaine Street. One tree fell on a home at 804 N. Bledsoe. The community of Big Sandy were also hit hard where 15 trees were downed on powerlines at one time. A tree also fell across Shattles Road near FM 49. Two trees in the Big Sandy City Park were uprooted. On Wildcat Drive, a tree fell on an empty brown building and split it in half. A huge tree also fell across a boat of a Gilmer resident and across a carport. Another tree fell atop a home at 200 Meason.

A strong cyclic supercell tornado developed over Mineola, Texas while a strong tornado developed shortly there after and moved to the east northeast. Numerous Pine, Oak, and other species of trees were either snapped or pushed over along the entire tornado track. Power lines were taken down across many locations along the track as well. The only structure in the path of this tornado was a construction trailer which was rolled over several times east of Gilmer, Texas. This tornado moved into Upshur County from Wood County and continued into Harrison and Marion Counties of northeast Texas.

Numerous trees toppled and power lines snapped near US 271 just north of town and at TX-2088 and Cougar road.

An artic airmass spilled southward out of the central plains and into the lower Mississippi Valley. This cold surface airmass was overrun by a warm and humid airmass which combined with a strong upper level storm system across west Texas. The result was widespread freezing rain. Ice accumulations on average of one inch were common north and west of a line from Mansfield and Arcadia to Farmerville LA. An estimated 235,000 residents lost power from snapped power lines. Upwards of 29 transmission lines atop "H" shaped steel towers were snapped due to the weight of the ice. One man was killed and another injured when a tree limb laden with ice fell on them. Numerous traffic accidents were reported from ice covered roads and bridges. In the Shreveport - Bossier metroplex more than 205 streets were either blocked or partially blocked by limbs and fallen trees. Much of northwest Louisiana was declared a disaster area.

A strong upper level trough moved out of the southern Great Basin and into the lower Mississippi Valley sweeping Artic Air southward to the Gulf Coast. Moisture laden air from the Gulf overran the freezing surface temperatures producing ice across the northern half of northeast Texas. Ice accumulations of one to four inches fell across most of the area with the ice and snow accumulations near 8 inches. Thousands of homes were left without power due to ice covered tree limbs falling and snapping powerlines. Also, hundreds of chicken houses were destroyed and several 7 million chicks were killed. Barns, carports, and weak structure homes suffered collapse from the weight of the ice and snow. Traffic accidents were numerous and I-30 west of Texarkana had to be shut down when the freeway became impassable.

Scattered strong storms developed during the heating of the afternoon across Northeast Texas. These storms developed along a residual outflow boundary from previous convection that had developed ahead of a weak upper level disturbance. This outflow boundary and complex of storms moved almost due south into Northeast Texas during the evening hours. One storm in Wood County produced strong damaging wind gusts which downed trees and powerlines.
