Periods of sleet during the morning and early afternoon brought new accumulations of up to around 1 inch of sleet to the county, with a transition to freezing rain during the afternoon producing around 0.25 inches of ice on trees and power lines by the evening. Some light freezing drizzle continued into the overnight hours.
Episodes
A broken line of thunderstorms moved through the area from the north on the evening of July 9th. These storms resulted in numerous instances of damaging winds that brought down trees and power lines mainly along and north of I-20.
Hurricane Laura made landfall along the Louisiana coast near Lake Charles in the early morning hours of August 27. It moved north into Central Louisiana during the morning and afternoon before turning to the northeast and tracking through Arkansas. Impacts from Laura were felt far from the center of the storm, which was mainly in the form of tropical storm force winds across portions of northeast Louisiana and southeast Arkansas. Farther east, into Mississippi, the tight pressure gradient that resulted from Laura was the cause for gusty winds across portions of western Mississippi. Winds were sustained 30 to 35 mph, gusting to 45 to 49 mph across portions of northeast Louisiana, southeast Arkansas and the northwest portion of Mississippi. This resulted in downed trees and power lines across the region. Since Laura moved inland fairly quickly, rainfall totals were not high. Rainfall amounts up to four inches occurred along and west of the Mississippi River and this resulted in some minor flooding.
The combination of a potent disturbance and a cold front had caused severe storms to cross the northern portion of Central Mississippi during the later afternoon and evening hours. These storms had produced some wind damage to trees, power lines as well as some businesses and homes. The main damage occurred over Holmes and Winston counties. These storms had also produced some isolated reports of quarter sized hail. Softball sized hail was reported at West in Holmes county.
A warm and moist airmass in place across the region allowed several severe storms to develop late on the 10th, and during the afternoon and evening of the eleventh. These storms produced wind damage to trees and power lines, as well as causing flash flooding.
An anomalous early autumn storm system brought severe weather to portions of the ArkLaMiss. Tornadoes, damaging winds and large hail occurred in the ArkLaMiss Delta during the evening hours of September twenty fifth. The most significant damage occurred in Cleveland, MS where a tornado damaged portions of a subdivision as well as a Walmart and Sears. The line of storms tracked very slowly to the south and east, causing numerous trees to fall across the Delta as well as flash flooding. Another tornado moved over Sunflower County near Drew. An agricultural pivot was flipped over and a few trees and power lines were blown down.
