Episodes

May 25, 2020

Isolated showers and thunderstorms developed late this afternoon into this evening. While these were overall weaker than those that occurred over the previous day or two in this persistent summer-like pattern, the slow movement of the storms led to flash flooding issues in Rowan and Bell Counties. Water rescues were performed in each county as water surrounded vehicles, while a tree toppled due to the flowing water near Morehead and landed on power lines, subsequently setting an apartment on fire. Additionally, a tree was downed near Gates in Rowan County as a thunderstorm briefly strengthened to severe limits.||Portions of Rowan County saw up to nearly 3 inches of rainfall, while western portions of Bell County saw amounts of 1 to 1.5 inches.

July 23, 2017

A prolonged line of thunderstorms developed on the evening of July 22nd near the Ohio River, slowly propagating southward late in the evening and after midnight into the 23rd. These made it south into Fleming and Rowan Counties, leading to numerous instances of wind damage and flash flooding. ||Several structures were damaged due to high winds in Flemingsburg, including one house being completely destroyed. Over 1,100 power outages were reported throughout the county. Numerous homes, roads, and drainage systems suffered water damage from flash flooding, while an automobile dealership sustained damage to nearly 200 vehicles. One observer reported a rainfall total of 6.66 inches. A state of emergency was verbally declared for the county.||Flooding damage was also abundant in Rowan County, particularly in and around Morehead. More than 30 water rescues were performed as motorists became stranded by flood waters blocking roadways. January 21, 2007

During the morning of January 21, 2007, residents of Eastern Kentucky saw a period of freezing rain. A trough of low pressure moved northeast ahead of a low pressure system over the Gulf Coast states. Warm air above the surface, combined with below freezing temperatures at the surface, caused rain to freeze on contact with exposed surfaces. Numerous reports of freezing rain were received. Many areas had a thin coating of ice, before warmer air moved into the region and changed the precipitation to rain. There were even a few reports of sleet and snow at the onset of the precipitation, mainly along and north of the Mountain Parkway. |The maximum ice thickness reported was around a tenth of an inch. The ice covered power lines, trees, roadways and other exposed surfaces. A few traffic accidents were also reported due to the slippery roads.

What is Power Outage?

Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.

What Causes Power Outages?

  • Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
  • Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.

What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?

  • Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
  • Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
  • Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
  • Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.
