Power Outage in Palestine, TX

Multiple trees were knocked down and power poles were snapped near West Oak and Ferguson Street.

Strong thunderstorm winds ranging from 50-70 mph moved across the northern portions of Anderson County. According to the summary report from local EMs:|A home on St Hwy 19N between Bradford and Bois D'Arc sustained wind damage to the back patio (metal roof torn up), tin off the barn, and huge tree branch in driveway that pulled down power meter/line at this location.||A home in the 4200 block of FM 860 had a large tree uprooted in the front yard that did damage to the front of the porch area of the home.||A home on FM 2706 had metal from the barn blown across the yard and onto neighbor property. Large tree was knocked down in the driveway. ||Several trees down across ACR 462, 463, 2601, 489, 458, 2101, 441. FM roads affected with trees down were FM 860, 837, 2330, 19.||Frankston had trees/powerlines down at ACR 309, 307, Lakeview MH park, 296 Kickapoo and FM 19 and ACR 322.||Trees and power lines were down on Hwy 19N in the Bradford/Montalba area as well.

Extreme cold gripped the county for several days. Overnight lows were near or below 25 degrees Fahrenheit almost all week. The period of February 15-16th was the coldest with low temperatures between 3 and -6 degrees Fahrenheit. The maximum temperature on the 15th was only in the lower teens. Wind chill values during the 14th-16th were between 10 to -10 degrees Fahrenheit most of the time. The cold temperatures resulted in an extreme amount of damage to pipes, infrastructure, and power.

Roof damage was reported in Palestine and power poles were also damaged. The report from a member of the nearby NASA balloon facility wrote: a microburst occurred in Palestine near the Courthouse by the intersection of Church and Poplar Street. The power poles that snapped were blown in one direction. Palestine Transmission Service suffered roof damage, and a metal building including beams was destroyed and blown across the street. There was no other damage in the immediate area..

Anderson County Sheriff's department reported trees and powerlines down across Anderson County.

Strong thunderstorm winds knocked down a few trees and power lines and possibly damaged a garage along Anderson County Road 142 between Palestine and Elkhart.

Emergency management reported that trees and power lines were blown down near the intersection of County Road 444 and FM 315.

Henderson #507 Fire burned 1400 acres and was started by power lines. This fire began near FM 322 and CR 2109 west of Elkhart. The fire began on the 5th, was contained on the 6th and controlled on the 15th.

Henderson #504 Fire burned 503 acres and burned one home. This fire began near FM 228 and CR 1214 in the far southeastern corner of the county. This fire was started by a downed power line.

A tree limb fell on a power line and sparked a grass fire the burned 464 acres near Todd City. The Todd City fire was centered near the intersection of FM 19 and CR 335 in the northeastern part of the county. The fire began on the 15th, was contained on the 15th, and then fully controlled on the 20th. The fire consumed a deer camp, a fiberglass salt water tank, several outbuildings, and an oil tank. One firefighter suffered heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation and was taken to the hospital.

Downed trees and power lines blocked numerous areas of downtown Palestine including South Magnolia at Bowers Street and Stephanie Drive, and Pecan, West Carolina, Timberline, and East Neches Streets.

Structural damage to homes was reported near the intersection of FM 1990 and Highway 294. Roofs were partially removed, trees were blown onto houses, and trees and power lines blown down. One house on CR 2137 just off FM 1990 had the ceiling cave in. In addition, the front porch was completely removed from the house and found in pieces over a hundred yards away. A horse trailer in the backyard was thrown about fifty yards from its original location and landed on its side.

A tornado formed near the intersection of CR 403 and CR 404 and moved north to near Elmwood, causing damage to homes, trees, sheds, and power lines. Trees were split, twisted, and uprooted. The county judge surveyed the damage and found the worst to be between FM 315 and CR 404.

Trees were blown down in roads in and around Palestine. In Neches, a 68-foot porch was entirely ripped off of a house and was strewn 100 feet away. Shingles were also torn off the roof. Also in Neches, more than 15 large trees and numerous power lines were uprooted near FM 2574, a trampoline was thrown across a highway into a tree, and numerous chicken coops were destroyed. A truck later ran into one of the trees laying across FM 2574.

Hurricane Rita made landfall in the early morning hours on Saturday, September 24. Rita was a dangerous Category 3 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale as she moved over Sabine Pass, Texas. Rita was downgraded to a Tropical Storm by early afternoon. As Rita moved north and then east along a Jasper, TX, to Lufkin, TX, to Shreveport, LA line...torrential rains and strong winds were felt well away from the eye. Most of eastern Texas was placed under an Inland Tropical Storm warning through the evening. The storm knocked dozens of trees and power poles down as it moved through north Texas. Gusts near 50 MPH were recorded in Hunt and Hopkins counties. Wind damage in the form of downed trees and power poles was reported in Anderson, Collin, Fannin, Hopkins, and Hunt counties. Roof damage also occured in Collin and Hunt.

A transformer was struck by lightning and caught on fire, causing power outages.
