Portageville Power Outages Caused by Weather

The video and the damage report were relayed by local broadcast media. There was no apparent damage path on the ground. The short path track was based on videos combined with radar data.
The EF-1 tornado damaged or destroyed several farm buildings. The farm buildings included large metal storage buildings. The concrete anchors of a shed were pulled from the ground. The tornado cut through the city of Marston, where the city hall and an apartment building were partially unroofed. At least three power poles were broken. Numerous trees were uprooted. The discernable tornado path ended in the Mississippi River flood plain. Peak winds were estimated near 95 mph.
A trained spotter estimated winds gusted to 70 mph in Catron. Interstate 55 was closed in both directions at mile marker 51 due to downed power lines.
A prolonged period of thunderstorms with torrential rain caused flash flooding in many areas. In New Madrid, a power outage aggravated the flooding situation by disabling pumps. Some basements were flooded. In Portageville, police received 26 calls from residents with flooded houses. The northeast section of Portageville and Highway 162 received the most flood damage. Water was generally three to six inches deep. Numerous roads were flooded around the county. About a foot of rain fell in New Madrid in the three-day period ending on the morning of the 24th. A co-operative observer in New Madrid measured 11.70 inches. An unofficial report of 12.35 inches was received from New Madrid.
