Sabetha Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Around sixes inches of snow was reported to have accumulated across the county. Emergency shelters that had been established after the ice storm were re-opened for residents of the county that were still without power during this winter weather event.
Between half of an inch and up to one and one quarter of an inch of ice accumulated on surfaces across Nemaha County, with some of the greatest totals reported in Seneca and Baileyville. City streets and rural roads across the county were blocked as a result of downed trees, limbs, and power lines. Officers reportedly ran out of orange cones to block off city streets���too many had downed power lines or trees. Rows of power poles were down in a few locations. No structural damage was reported, but it was reported that there was not a tree in Sycamore Springs that wasn���t damaged by the ice���nor many trees in Sabetha and the surrounding area that were not adversely affected by the accumulated ice.. Centralia High School students who were out of school during the period due to lack of electricity spent much of their time helping residents clean up after the storm. A woman was injured when a piece of ice dislodged from a building, fell, and struck her in the head. She suffered a concussion, and needed several stitches.
Episodes
On the afternoon of the 20th a cold front moved through the area causing isolated thunderstorms to develop. The dew points ahead of the front were close to 70 degrees which allowed for decent instability to fuel the storms. As storms weakened severe downbursts damaged trees and power lines.
Severe thunderstorms erupted over part of northeast Kansas the late afternoon hours of the 29th and continued well into the nighttime hours. Many tornadoes (listed separately) and funnel clouds were reported. There were numerous reports of large hail and damaging winds as well. Considerable damage was done, primarily in Republic county, to many homes and businesses. Power lines were downed in some locations. Large hail did considerable damage to crops in the area. Runoff from heavy rains produced flash flooding for a time in Republic county as well.
