Spearfish Power Outages Caused by Weather
Events
Power lines and trees were downed over US Highway 14A between Cheyenne Crossing and Savoy.
The tornado tracked across forested terrain of the northern Black Hills for 15.5 miles. Many trees were snapped or uprooted along its path. Although the tornado itself did not cause property damage, trees were blown down onto houses and power lines.
Large pine trees, spruce trees, and power poles were broken along the eastern rim of Spearfish Canyon. The worst damage occurred from Bridal Veil Falls to Victoria Lane.
Episodes
A powerful line of severe thunderstorms moved traversed Lawrence County entirely from west to east. Several reports of three-quarter inch diameter hail were received across the county. The associated rainfall created flash flooding and mudslides in downtown Deadwood where a recent large forest fire had destroyed vegetation and severely burned the ground to within a few feet of structures in town. Mud and water two to three feet deep ran through downtown streets and businesses. Debris from the mudslides damaged several houses, vehicles, and the hospital.
