West Plains Power Outages Caused by Weather

Multiple power poles and lines were reported down with nearly 100 homes reported without power.
Precipitation started as rain during the afternoon of January 24th before changing over to snow during the late afternoon, with the snow then continuing into the morning of January 25th. Widespread snow amounts between 6 and 12 inches fell across the county. A public report of a measured storm total of 12.0 inches of snow was received from 3 miles NE of Lanton, with a measured 11.0 inches in West Plains relayed via broadcast media. These were the highest snow reports in the entire NWS Springfield County Warning Area throughout this event. Roads became snow covered and slippery. Up to over 6500 power outages also occurred across the county due to the heavy snow, with power outages lingering into January 27th. Some schools had early release on January 24th, with numerous schools closed on January 25th and January 26th.

The local police department observed thunderstorm wind gusts blow down several trees and power lines in Mountain View.
Straight line winds blew the roof off of an old 7-UP bottling company building. Along with the structural damage, numerous trees and power lines were downed.
60 mph winds caused several trees to be uprooted from north of Vanzant to Willow Springs. Quarter size hail and power lines were also blown down in Willow Springs.

Read below for more: Sho-Me Power, the wholesale electric provider of Howell-Oregon Electric Cooperative, Inc., has scheduled a planned power outage for the Alton Substation beginning at 11:59 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, lasting for approximately 4 hours. Members in the Alton area will be without power during the planned outage for maintenance purposes.If this outage lasts longer than the estimated time, information will be posted on the Howell-Oregon Facebook page. Howell-Oregon Electric Cooperative (HOEC), headquartered in West Plains, Missouri, delivers cost-efficient, reliable electricity to approximately 25,000 meters in south-central Missouri across six counties: Douglas, Ozark, Texas, Shannon, Howell and Oregon. The powerline seems to have started a fire near the transfer station on Old Airport Road in West Plains. Power is out for a large number of people in West Plains and Phone lines are being affected.
