Power Outage in West Plains, MO

Multiple power poles and lines were reported down with nearly 100 homes reported without power.

Precipitation started as rain during the afternoon of January 24th before changing over to snow during the late afternoon, with the snow then continuing into the morning of January 25th. Widespread snow amounts between 6 and 12 inches fell across the county. A public report of a measured storm total of 12.0 inches of snow was received from 3 miles NE of Lanton, with a measured 11.0 inches in West Plains relayed via broadcast media. These were the highest snow reports in the entire NWS Springfield County Warning Area throughout this event. Roads became snow covered and slippery. Up to over 6500 power outages also occurred across the county due to the heavy snow, with power outages lingering into January 27th. Some schools had early release on January 24th, with numerous schools closed on January 25th and January 26th.

A tree falling on power lines started a fire off of Highway 160 about 5 miles southwest of West Plains.

A roof of a business was destroyed in downtown West Plains. Several awnings were also destroyed. A large tree was blown down. There were numerous tree limbs blown down on power lines. A localized microburst was likely the cause of the wind damage.

There was minor damage to a business located on County Road 1820 and Highway 63 in the community of Olden. A roof was blown off a building and electric wire was pulled from the building. Several large tree limbs were blown down on to power lines and a transformer.

There was minor to moderate damage to 9 barns, two shops, and two public buildings. Numerous trees and power lines were blown down. Winds were estimated up to 120 mph.

A major winter storm produced snow, sleet and freezing rain across southwest and south central Missouri. Snow accumulations were around 1 inch with significant sleet accumulations of up to 2 inches. Freezing rain accumulated up to one half of an inch with scattered power outages. Travel was extremely treacherous.

A few store awnings were damaged from severe thunderstorm wind gusts. Numerous trees and limbs were downed by the winds with at least one SUV damaged when a large tree fell on it. These severe wind gusts also snapped six power poles along Highway 160 and downed the broadcast tower of K38HE TV within the city limits.

Sixty to 80 mph winds impacted central and northern Howell County. Damage to trees, power poles, and a few outbuildings were observed. The city of West Plains only sustained minor damage to a few roofs, meanwhile, areas in and around Willow Springs and Mountain View experienced extensive tree and structural damage.

A significant accumulation of freezing rain, sleet and snow resulted in treacherous travel conditions and numerous power outages. As many as 6500 residents were without power. The weight of freezing rain and sleet caused roofs of four buildings and a barn to collapse. Ice accretion of near one half to one inch was followed by 4 to 7 inches of sleet and snow.
