Power Outage in Morehead City, NC

Several power outages were reported in the Peletier area of western Carteret County.

A tree was blown down on a powerline. The time was estimated based on radar data.

Carteret-Craven Electric Cooperative reported limbs down on powerlines at the intersection of Barnes Dr. and Sound Dr. in Emerald Isle.

Power company reported tree limbs down on powerlines in the Crab Point community of Morehead City. Time based on radar.

Power lines were reportedly blown down at the Dunkin Donuts on Cedar Island Blvd. The time was estimated based on radar data.

Trees were blown down. CCEC reports several hundred customers without power between Emerald Isle and Indian Beach. The time of the reported outages match radar data.

The tornado path started along the shores of Bogue Sound near Bayshore|Drive in Cape Carteret and quickly moved north-northeast across Live Oak Drive. An|eyewitness here saw the tornado move down the street. Damage included|minor uplift of a porch, along with some siding and a uprooted tree. |More damage occurred along Park Avenue from near Live Oak Drive to Easy|Street. Most of the significant damage was blown toward the north |(southerly wind) and included large limbs down, along with damage to a |power line. In addition some shingles were blown off of a new roof. Of |interest was a tremendous amount of leaf debris that was along the north|and east sides of the houses along both Live Oak Drive and Park Avenue.|Although very subtle, this leaf debris could only occur on those sides |of the homes with a north to northeast wind, which was in the opposite |direction of most of the storm damage and therefore indicated likely |rotation. The damage path ended near the corner of Park Avenue and Easy|Street.||Overall damage along the path was relatively minor with 1 tree uprooted|that was already leaning due to Florence, and minor shingle loss of |another structure. Top winds were estimated to be around 80 mph or an |EF0 tornado.

The damage path started along Club Colony Drive and consisted of some siding|blown toward the northwest, with more debris scattered toward the southeast.|The damage path continued north-northeast toward Freeman Lane and just west|of Sands Villa. Damage here consisted of multiple sheds blown and rolled 10 to|20 yards away, some of which were originally strapped to the ground. Some loss of |roofing material was also found but may have already been compromised from|Hurricane Florence. Winds peaked along East Fort Macon Road and the intersection|of Sands Villa Drive as a power pole was snapped near the top, with 2 more|blown down enough to lean significantly. Winds here were estimated to be|around 90 MPH or a low end EF-1 tornado. The path continued over Bogue|Sound to Morehead City where another area of damage was found especially between|and near 4th and 5th streets. Here, a street sign was blown over, with another broken|off at the top. Minor uplift of a metal roof was found along with some large branches|snapped.

A first ever, county wide mandatory evacuation was issued prior to Florence. Widespread heavy rain and strong winds developed over the region from the morning of September 13th through the morning of September 16th. Rainfall was generally 20��� to 25��� over the county with a storm total of 25.62��� at the National Weather Service office in Newport. Extremely heavy rainfall across the county initially lead to flash flooding with numerous roads that were impassable. The Newport River for the first time in recent history overflowed its banks and inundated many homes and businesses near the river. Over 400 water rescues were reported in the county, most of which were along and near the Newport River. US 70 was closed in numerous spots between Havelock and Morehead City due to floodwaters rushing over the roadway. Gusty northeast winds developed ahead of Florence as the storm approached the coast, with a peak wind gust of 106 mph at Cape Lookout at 617 LST on September 13th and a 105 mph gust at Fort Macon at 723 PM EST on September 13th. The gusty winds combined with saturated ground led to many downed trees with widespread power outages. Preliminary storm surge values (above ground level) of 2 to 3 feet were found in Morehead City and Atlantic Beach, with 2 to 4 feet above ground level found in Salty Shores (Newport) and Cedar Key. 2.7 feet of storm surge was found along Goose Creek. Nearby it was estimated around 3 feet of surge covered highway 24 near the Town of Bogue, and closed the roadway on September 14th near high tide. NWS storm survey confirmed a EF 1 tornado occurred at Open Grounds Farms. Several outbuildings and large silos were damaged. Maximum winds were estimated at 100 to 110 mph. NWS storm survey confirmed a EF 1 tornado touched down near Davis on 9/14 at 1101 EST. Maximum estimated winds were around 90 mph. NWS storm survey confirmed a EF 1 tornado occurred near Otway on 9/14 at 1215 EST in rural Eastern Carteret County. Maximum estimated winds were around 100 mph. NWS storm survey confirmed a EF 1 tornado 2 miles northeast of Stella on 9/14 at 2128 EST in Carteret County and White Oak township in southern Jones county. Maximum estimated winds were around 100 mph.

Trees were blown down onto power lines.

Carteret County Emergency Services reported a tornado that struck Lewis Luther Crab House just north of Davis. The tornado demolished the backside of the building scattering debris across Highway 70 in a marsh to the north and snapping a wood power pole along Highway 70. The tornado moved north northeast for 4.2 miles across Open Ground Farms before downing 5 additional power poles located along Nelson Bay road. A NWS damage survey team assessed the tornado to be a strong EF1 with winds estimated at 110 mph.

Trampoline overturned and shingles ripped off roof. A nearby transformer was also blown with power outages.

Hurricane Arthur produced sustained hurricane force winds along coastal sections Down-east Carteret County. Maximum sustained winds of 77 mph were measured at Cape lookout with peak winds of 101 mph during the late evening hours of July 3rd. This resulted in minor wind damage with scattered power outages. A two to three foot storm surge occurred along the coast and adjacent to the lower reaches of the Neuse River. One to four inches of storm total rainfall was measured across the county resulting in minor freshwater flooding. No significant damages were reported by Emergency Management. There were no storm related injuries or fatalities.

Morehead City police reported several trees and power lines blown down in Morehead City. Wind gust of 63 mph measured at police station.

Across Carteret County...winds gusted above hurricane force with the highest reading at Cedar Island at 115 mph. High winds resulted in numerous trees and Power-lines down and structural damage. Surge values were 4 to 7 Feet, highest at South River, flooding numerous homes and Businesses. Heavy rainfall of 6 to 12 inches resulted in flooding of streets and low lying areas. Significant damage occurred to structures and crops.

Highest storm surge occurred across downeast Carteret county with a 2 foot sound side surge. Ocean side surge of 1 to 2 feet resulted in minor beach erosion. Winds gusted as high as 66 mph at Sea Level in eastern Carteret county during the early morning hours on the 3rd. Only minor damage was reported some trees and power lines down with isolated power outages. Rainfall was heaviest across eastern sections with as much as 2 inches reported. Mandatory evacuations were in effect for coastal Carteret county from the evening of the 1st through the morning of the 3rd.

Storm surge of 2 to 3 feet with minor beach erosion. Winds up to 60 mph resulted in trees and power lines down and sporadic power outages.

Emergency Management reported power poles going to Harkers Island were blown down.

Severe thunderstorm produced a weak tornado that touched down near Cape Carteret, blowing over trees and power lines.
