Power Outage FAQs
What is Power Outage?
Power outage (also called a power cut, a power blackout, power failure or a blackout) is a short-term or a long-term loss of the electric power to a particular area.
What Causes Power Outages?
- Severe weather (high winds, lightning, winter storms, heat waves, rain or flooding can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Other damage to electric transmission lines (vehicle accidents, trees, and animals can cause damage to power lines or equipment);
- Repairing, maintenance or upgrades on power lines and equipment.
What are the Top Outage Safety Tips?
- Stay away from the downed power lines, park vehicles in protected areas;
- Unplug appliances and electronics, limit cell phone use to conserve battery life;
- Use portable generators outdoors only, well away from open windows and doors;
- Pack perishable foods into a cooler, keep refrigerator and freezer doors shut as much as possible.

Nevada City, CA 95959 Not Grizzly Flats: Our issue with PG$E: We are it seems part of a group of about 200+ customers of PG&E who are just about the first to lose power and the last to get it back. This is the 6th (sixth) time this year (2022) that we have lost power and all we have is a little breeze up here. No snow, needed rain, and windy. This is not a drastic weather situation whatsoever but just like clockwork: out goes PG&E power service followed shortly by your messages informing us that we are out of power as if we did not already know it. It has become almost a joke up here that the slightest breeze acts like a hurricane to your services and equipment for some reason. Earlier this year with snow the “group of 200+” as we are now calling ourselves was without power for 14 (that’s fourteen) days! Same “200+” group, same area, same calls from you, so much the same. But one thing for sure: power outage is going to happen almost like clock-work with the “slightest” inclement condition. We see Mountain and others clearing tons of trees and limbs on an ongoing basis up here so we know you are spending money to stop the outages, or so it seems?? We are absolutely tired of being the first to lose and the last to regain. We are tired of living on our generators. We are tired of this really bad service from PG$E. We would like intelligent responses from your management on our situation with zero canned excuses: Why are we the first to go? Why are we the last to get restored? What is causing these outages (be honest)? What is PG$E doing to mitigate this on going condition to this group of 200+ customers? When can we expect this to be fixed and stop these outages? It’s almost as if PG$E needs to shave service to prevent damage or to ensure power is available in more dense $$$ areas, or from a resource standpoint we are bottom of the bucket, or possibly more sinister reasons, or maybe some or all the above? Don Seferovich Nevada City, CA 95959 PS: Suggesting that it’s because we have chosen to live in the woods is not a reason so please don’t go there! PPS: We are on our genset power as I write this note. Weather report: rain, about 37 degF, slight wind, no snow, no hail, no powerful winds nor strong breezes. Sent from my iPhone
