Power Outage in Moberly, MO

Light to moderate freezing rain formed early morning on New Year's Day. This freezing rain quickly accreted between a quarter to three quarters inch before sunrise. Shortly after sunrise the freezing rain switched to light snow, which persisted for the bulk of the remaining day time hours. The snow did not accumulate more than 1 to 3 inches, but on top of the ice accretion created winter storm conditions. Mostly scattered power outages and vehicle accidents were the impacts, but being a holiday, road traffic was likely light.

Public reported 70 mph wind near Moberly. Power was knocked out due to the wind.

Emergency management reported that there was roof damage to a few homes and outbuildings after strong winds moved through Higbee. There were also several trees of unknown size or condition blown down onto houses and powerlines, as well as blocking some area roads. The main swath of these winds were along a line from the south side of Moberly into Higbee.

Trained weather spotters from across the area reported between .10 and .30 of freezing rain on December 21. The highest amount of ice accumulation in the area, of .30 came out of Booneville, in nearby Boone County. Once the freezing rain ended light snow accumulated throughout the area during the overnight hours. Between 1 and 3 inches of snow fell on top of the ice accumulation. Some power outages occurred, but no widespread effects were reported from this ice storm.

Thunderstorm wind gusts were estimated up to 60 mph. The wind snapped off a two and a half foot diameter tree. The tree fell against a power pole and brought it and a power line down.

Severe thunderstorm produced wind damage in the Moberly area. Two hangars were destroyed at the airport and two were damaged. A King Air turboprop was damaged. Numerous signs, trees, and power lines were downed in the city.

Numerous thunderstorms formed in the evening and night time hours on August 16. Large hail between 1 and 1.75 inch was reported, along with 60 to 70 mph winds. Most of the damage was relegated to tree, power line, and some minor structure damage.
